The Alonzo Youth Movement is an inner-city ministry designed to keep children and youth out of gangs by offering them Christian community and is an example of the Lord bringing life out of death. October 28th, 2009 was one of the saddest days in the history of LAMB. One of Suzy McCall’s scholarship students from ten years ago, Alonzo Salgado, a bright young husband and father, just months from completing his work for a law degree, was shot and killed by some kids who wanted his cell phone.

Hundreds of people came to LAMB for the memorial service of Alonzo, shocked and shaken. The community mourned with his precious wife Erika and their little girl who is a student in our school. Out of this senseless death, Gladys Urrutia, Director of LAMB at the time, was given a vision for the coming together of the churches in Flor del Campo (the neighborhood where LAMB is located within Tegucigalpa) to pray in a movement of the Holy Spirit to reach out to the many troubled youth who have either left or have never been in the church. By December 5th, 2009, fifteen volunteers were trained and began inviting youth to gatherings. For the first time in many years, the local churches are working together in order to take back their youth.   Out of Alonzo’s death, now comes life for some 170 youths who are meeting weekly in 9 groups of 25+ at LAMB.

These after school and Saturday gatherings are lovingly planned with hopefilled activities for these young people.  Some of these activities include tutoring and help with school work, art and crafts, music, Christian life lessons for spiritual formation, life skills, soccer, and more. 

The firey love of God is flowing through the Alonzo Movement.  Pray that many more boys and girls will be saved from the hopelessness of life on the street as a gang member.
